Question on 'Up All Night' & 'Rat Tracks'

Howdy All,

Following Sunday nights' terrific gig, I'm re-listening to every Boomtown Rats album, all 6 of which are darn fine, nay, excellent!

V Deep has always been a favourite; the musical journey from the first album through the V Deep is extraordinary; never a band to take the safe option, they grew and created 6 distinct, different and delightful albums.

'Up All Night' - for me that's always been a part of 'V Deep', but, initially it appeared on 'Mondo Bongo'?? Can someone tell me why it is now part of V Deep if it was actually an album track on 1981s Bongo? Both albums I think are excellent, the duo of Visconti produced records the artistic equal of the Mutt Lange era.

'Rat Tracks' - EP, 1981, this contains a live version of 'Nothing Happened Today'. I wonder, is this the same version on the reissue of 'Fine Art'? The live version, from Cardiff I think, is excellent, truly excellent.

'Real Different' was a B Side to the Bongo era tracks or exclusive to Rat Tracks?

Last query, sorry lol  'Say Hi to Mick' - again, for the past 10 years, since I became a fan, this is part of 'V Deep', but I'm just after reading it was a B Side to a Long Grass track?

Ye Gods! They had so many wonderful B Sides, some of which not even included on the reissues; 'Born to Burn', 'Man at the Top', the original 7" of 'Do the Rat'..etc.

Thank you in advance for any information!

It appeared on the US Mondo Bongo but not the UK Mondo Bongo.    It first appeared re-recorded in the UK on V Deep.  So the answer is it was always part of V Deep outside the US.

I don't have Rat Tracks, but I suspect it is either the same as the re-issue or the version on the Charmed Lives singles.

It was a B-side to Elephant's Graveyard in the UK and most likely elsewhere.

B Side on A Hold of Me 12" in UK.   May have been on other releases, but I don't know as I don't have them.

And there are plenty of alternate single mixes (Clockwork, Rat Trap, Mondays, Someone's Looking, Banana Republic, Elephant's Graveyard, House on Fire) .   If I'm not in the car, I just listen to the original vinyl.  It's better, and the songs are in the right order with the correct spacing.

Thanks very much ArrGee; one further Q on 'Up All Night' - if it was on the U.S. issue of 'Mondo Bongo', then it was recorded during the 'Bongo' sessions?

Up All Night was also released as a single in the US with Another Piece Of Red on the b-side.It was also released as a single in Germany on both 7 and 12" with a cool picture sleeve.I also believe it was in the top 40 in Germany.I believe the live version of Nothing Happened Today is the same as the extra single that came with the double pack of Charmed Lives.Real Different was on the b-side to Elephants Graveyard and Say Hi To Mick was was only on the b-side of A Hold Of Me 12".

It may have been recorded in Ibiza, but I can't be 100% certain.  When bands make albums there can be a haphazardness to the recording, and even if the majority of the work was done in Ibiza, it's possible that they went into a different studio to add finishing touches or maybe just record Up All Night in its entirety.

What I do know is that there are two distinct recordings one for Mondo and one for V Deep.  Unless the band or Visconti decide to post (and they are more than welcome) that is probably as much as most of us will ever know.  House on Fire was also supposed to have been originally recorded pre-Mondo.  Again only the band or Visconti could confirm that if they could remember, but I think it is highly likely.
