Unusual copy of Rat Trap
Permalink

I'm hoping someone might be able to shed some light on a copy of Rat Trap I've just picked up on Ebay?

The first unusual thing is that it's pressed in blue vinyl with red injection moulded labels - I've uploaded some images here: http://www.45cat.com/record/eny16.

One side is the standard UK Ensign pressing of Rat Trap - it looks very much like the French-made version of ENY16 that normally has a silver label.  The other side is an RCA Victor release by a singer called Drupi (who I'd never heard of).

I'm guessing this disc was made by mistake - two mismatching stamps were used to make it? But what I'm more intrigued by is what was the original intention?  Was this intended to be a blue vinyl version of Rat Trap - other than the white vinyl 'Mondays' (on Vertigo) and the clear vinyl 'ticket' version of 'Dave' I'm not aware of any other coloured vinyl pressings by The Rats - certainly nothing on Ensign.

Was this supposed to be a blue vinyl pressing of the Drupi single?  If so there's nothing listed on Ebay, 45Cat or Discogs.

It this just someone testing a machine in the factory with whatever was to hand?

I'd love to hear if anyone has any ideas??

Thats very intersting.Drupi is an Italian artist who like the Rats was very big in the late 70s.I can only think that this is a duke box promo. Some of Bobs solo work has different artist on the b-side of some duke box singles.Whats the name of the Drupi song?(itīs very hard to read).

It's 'Piero Va' - which I can't find as a French release on 45Cat or Discogs. Someone on 45Cat also suggested the disc was probably a Jukebox pressing - which would explain one record with two artists on totally different labels (Ensign/RCA Victor).

The only slight issue I have with that is if the disc is buried in a jukebox, would they bother to press it in blue vinyl? I've got/had Kate Bush jukebox vinyl and they didn't even bother to spray the injection molded label.

Jukebox or not this record is currently one of my favourites - I've got a lot of Boomtown Rats singles and the blue/red combination really makes this stands out!

It really is a mystery why you would put a duke box single on blue vinyl.I had never heard of this copy before so it is a rare one.

Just been digging up some more bits on the Drupi song. The song Piero Va was a b-side to the single Provincia in Italy but released as a single in France.Piero Va is also available as a square flexi disc with a picture of 2 sheep on it from POLAND!.So it fits that it was a duke box copy from France.
