The Boomtown Rats were on the BBC 1 quiz show, Pointless.  The contestants selected Irish bands as their choice for the final round.

They were given 3 bands - Bewitched, The Cranberries and the Rats, and had to name 3 records (of which they had to get 1 correct as being pointless) where people asked in a poll would NOT have answered as having been a hit, eg: for the Rats, the song "I Don't Like Mondays" would not have earned you many points as a fair number of people would have answered this as having been a hit.

6 Rats songs were pointless: Elephant's Graveyard, Like Clockwork, House on Fire, and I can't remember the others offhand.

I was not watching but my wife told me, and I did get two when she quizzed me - Elephant's Graveyard and House on Fire.  A bit surprised about Like Clockwork as reached number 5 in the UK charts, but obviously a hit close on 40 years ago now.

Should be available on BBC iplayer.

Yeh I saw it they said she's so modern also surprised these were pointless (incidentally were mentioned on the chase the other week ) as most were big hits

Surprised as. One of the answers (pointless) was someone's looking at you this really surprised me as it was huge hit and would have thought a lot more people would know it but there you go

And one of my favourite Rats singles.......along with 'Looking After Number One'.

There's a spy in the sky...There's a noise on the wire.....There's a tap on the line......For every paranoia's desire.....Someone's Looking At You.....

Love those lyrics.

Reached number 4 in the UK charts, which along with one of the other Pointless answers (Like clockwork = 5) was one of their biggest charting hits.

Mary of the 4th Form was the other pointless answer.

The whole show is pointless, Ive never really taken to it. The format is counter intuitive and like a confusing Family Fortunes. My other half told me about it when I got in from work.

I thought that was a comment on this forum!

I am surprised there were only 6 pointless answers. Mondays aside I would have expected them all to be with the possible exception of Rat Trap.

Missed this one but I quite enjoy the show and getting pointless answers. Mat Osman was a pointless answer (which I knew) when they had a band member question in the final round much to the amusement of his brother.

IMHO better than Family Fortunes!

The forum is never pointless! It may be less well attended than hitherto (whats happened to Suss and Jules?) by most, but with 2018 lining up to be an active festivals year and the prospect, still, of the new album, plus maybe an autumn tour, still lots to comment on. Archive tv clips continue to surface, although granted we have probably discussed to death the old songs and the back in the day side of things, so its all still quite good and worth logging into and I do this most weeks.

Family Fortunes will still be the original and the best for me. From the early ATV-produced Bob Monkhouse editions through the Max Bygraves years (Turkey?) and then the Les Dennis era. Seems now just to exist on a celebrity basis with Vernon Kay. The wrong answer sound (uh oh) has passed into legend. Bob evens mimics it in the middle of Never in a Million Years @ 1.59
