Out of Dublin, one of the finest bands in the late 70s and early 80s, one of them went to Japan  reformed a few years ago, thought I was reading about the Boomtown Rats.

Then reality struck..this lot have managed to put out a post-reformation album! It's about the Blades. I'm going to look into them on the basis of this article. Any knowledge Noel?

I think they started out in the late 70's. Decent band though they never had any hit singles or broke into the big time like the Rats. Got a lot of radio play on alternative radio in Ireland,

I've always seen them as a kind of Irish Jam, the look and feel obviously influenced by the latter. Downmarket and Ghost of a Chance are good songs, if grim and earnest in subject matter. Radiators from Space were contemporaries and supported  the Rats at the Olympia for the 40th anniversary concert.

To be honest I was never a big fan of the Irish music scene and for me the Rats stand out way and above all the others including U2, Undertones etc. I fell in love with the Rats when I was young and have never changed my mind about them after all this time. Hope that doesn't change when Mega comes out!

If I was to pick an Irish band I think is any  good (apart from the Rats of course!) it would be a group that  around in the early nineties called Rollerskate Skinny.

Never heard of them.  Other Irish bands I like include are Thin Lizzy, U2, Ash, JJ72 and Divine Comedy.  The rest I can take or leave.  Did like Starjets and Thrills at one point as I bought their LPs, but not so much now.

I think Rollerskate Skinny's best song is Miss Leader. Give it a listen. This is what I call the 'in in one' test. Listen to a song by a band you know nothing about and you either think they are worth checking out further or you're just not impressed.

I've been rediscovering  Kula Shaker for the last few weeks. Completely forgot about them until I came across Tattva, one of their old singles on Youtube. Way too good to be mixed up with the  like of Oasis back in the Britpop days but largely overlooked and forgotten, but I can honestly say they are a pretty unique band.

Saw Kula Shaker a couple of years ago at Wilton's Music Hall and they were fab!  Not so much they were unique, but they sound groovy and great.  Hey Dude is awesome.
