The history of Geldof's guitar playing is intriguing... (I'm predicting an onslaught of barbs about the quality his guitar playing... but putting them on one side.... I'm curious on the history of it).
The earliest time I have seen him with a guitar (well prancing around with one) is the 'Someone's Looking At You' promotional video in the red t shirt in 1979.
He played a 12 string acoustic guitar for 'A Hold of Me' in 1984 and he can be seen in the Band Aid recording session with an acoustic guitar.
Almost all of his solo work has had an acoustic guitar.
I don' t believe I have ever seen him with an electric guitar. Has anybody else?
Not much point in Bob playing electric guitar with Gerry and Gary doing the honours and Pete on bass.
Bob must have known enough about playing acoustic guitar to write the vast majority of the Rats songs. He quite possibly wrote some using electric guitar, it's well within the bounds of possibility.
I've never seen him play one in public but I prefer Geldof when he is sans any kind of guitar and he can just prance about on stage.
Considering he's been strumming away for well over 40 years there's no reason to doubt his guitar playing skills and the fact that he is left handed meant that he was somewhat disadvantaged when he had to initially learn to play.

Plenty of good lefties (Paul McCartney most famously), but Geldof plays it upside down as his school friend wouldn't let him swap the strings. I suspect this limits his playing. Anyway, ain't three chords enough? Rumour has it that Garry has learnt a fifth chord and will be playing it on the new LP.
