IT was a tale of two Bobs at Byron Bay's East Coast Blues and Roots festival yesterday.
Boomtown Rats star Bob Geldof and reggae icon Bob Marley's son Damian were the talk of the crowds at the annual festival.
Geldof arrived in the NSW coastal town on Friday and spent the night grooving backstage to the Blind Boys of Alabama, before headlining last night's event in front of 16,000 fans.
But it was Damian "Jr Gong" Marley – the youngest son of Bob Marley and a former Miss Jamaica – who stole the show with his reggae hip-hop.
"We are absolutely honoured to have Damian and Bob here. They represent the spirit of what this festival is about – they are the heart and soul," Blues Fest co-director and partner Glenn Wheatley said.
Perfect weather and the festival's depth of talent left Byron bursting at the seams with 80,000 music pilgrims expected to attend the Easter event.
Good Friday's lunchtime traffic caused the blues for motorists, with the Pacific Highway north of Byron coming to a standstill.
The Hilltop Hoods and Bernard Fanning started the festival with a bang on Thursday, and massive crowds devoured David Gray on Friday.
A review of the whole festival. How does Bob feel, I wonder about being labelled a"lesser Mick Jagger"? Lets all go bird spotting ,we might just see the elusive LMJ.
I don't believe they said he "sang with indifference." I think their point was that he performed the song "Indifference" a time or two too many.
But thats not true is it. Calmed down now, whatever (if thats what makes you HAPPY?????!!!!) But thats not true is it. Just not my thing, and the KIDS. I cant talk(but i tend to anyway) never been no angel had quite a year wondering is that it? searching the net for cards, stars and stuff that never arrived or was hopeless when it did. Taught me a thing or two. I still hope things stop getting out of hand and get sorted for everybody's sake. Sometimes it seems things have to be brought crashing down so that eyes can open and new times can begin if we choose. I've choosen to leave this all here now. If you would just...... well you'll do what you want - i know i tend to do. Won't bother you here again. Goodbye
Well it does seem to be standard practice to open and close a Geldof show with TGSOI.......and the song does have that "Come All Ye" quality about it that makes it a great live number...
The last Geldof show I saw ran to around the two hour mark though, and while that gave a good gap between performances of TGSOI, maybe the set at the festival was short enough for it to be too repetitious. Then of course if you're performing at any sort of festival, your audience are not all as familiar with your work... (Remember Robbie Williams at Live 8!)
I saw Shawn Mullins (f***ing AWESOME show, btw) last week, and between songs he told the story of how when he was touring the UK, the promoter (or was it his record co?) kept urging him to both open and close the show with his then-hit single. He thought this was rather bizarre.....
And...last year U2 occasionally both opened and closed with "Vertigo", something they did much more frequently in Europe. There was a lot of grumbling when they did it for audiences here in the States...
So, is this a common occurrence in other parts of the world? I thought it was just Bob, but maybe it's a tradition I don't know anything about.
UB40 did this in their heyday with "Red, Red , Wine". It does give the impression of having nothing else to sing I think. Or could be construed that way....
Does anyone else remember UB40 singing anything else?
