I tried to post this last night - here's hoping this time ...
How bizarre. I've just watched a Melbourne-based variety show called 'Rove', where Bob was listed as one of the guests. Something was up at the start because in Rove's introduction, where he cracks really bad jokes and lists the guests for the show, Bob wasn't mentioned. I thought this was really strange, cause even if Bob wasn't going to appear, I would have expected it to be announced ...
Well, after about 15 minutes, Rove said Bob Geldof is someone to 'share moments' with, and out of nowhere came a clip of Rove and Bob lying on their backs on a picnic rug surrounded in all sorts of picnicky things, with the camera looking down on them.
Then this (as close to quotes as I can be): Rove: Bob, you've got so many things on your plate, is there anything else you want to do? Bob: Yeah, Rove. I really want to get involved with saving animals. Saving the whale, something like that. Rove: But what about the "crazy frog", you'd kill that. Bob: Yeah, get rid of that ****er.
Back to show.
After about another 15 mins, same cut to same Rove & Bob lying on picnic rug.
Rove: I've been wondering about my prostate. Bob: Yeah, it's important to have regular checks. I check myself about 30 times a day ... in fact, I'll give it a check now (as Bob moves arm from behind his head to his side).
Back to show.
Sure enough, same cut to same Rove and Bob about 15 minutes. This time:
Rove: I wish I was tall. Bob: Yeah, I wish I was 20 feet tall so I could vomit down chimneys when I'm pissed. Rove: You're a strange man, Bob. Bob: That's Sir Bob.
Back to show.
Next one:
Rove: Isn't it strange how slang has changed? Bob: Yeah, like wicked means great. And how smelly old wanker really means highly intelligent individual. Rove: No, Bob. Smelly old wanker means smelly old wanker. Bob: Yeah, Rove? Fucking kids.
Back to show.
Rove plugs Bob's concert here some time later.
That's IT. Apart from an outtake at the end of Rove and Bob laughing at saying "smelly old wanker".
I just can't BELIEVE what I heard. I just can't BELIEVE that was just shown nationally. I want to yell at Bob - "what do you think you're doing???????"
Playing on the swearing and scruffiness is one thing, but this is insane. I cringe to think of the impression he's left, even if he doesn't give a *%$@.
I watched it too, but I thought it was actually quite funny. I was really dissapointed, because I thought there would be an interview of some sort, and then the first thing came on and I was like WTF? But it was funny though,
"What about the crazy frog" "Oh except that. That f*cker deserves a bullet"
The last one was the best though
"....old smelly wanker means highly respected invdividual" "Uh no it just means old smelly wanker" "what? really? f*ckin kids!"
That last one cracked up everyone in the room.
But yeah, like I said dissapointing not to see an interview but it wasn't too bad none the less.
By the way, do you know if Bob's doing any other tv appearances while he's here? Like 60 minutes or anything? Im hoping to see atleast one interview, I mean how often does he come here!
Also I don't think it left a bad impression or anything either. I mean, most people think of Bob as his angry man who just swears alot. But now they've seen that he is a funny guy (Who still swears alot lol). But yeah, he didn't leave a bad impression. Even my mum was laughing and she's never really liked him, but it kinda changed her opinion.

I don't know of any. That was part of the reason I found his time on 'Rove' so bad ...

Sorry, but when did saying by implication that you regularly stick your finger up your arse become eccentric or funny?
The prostate one wasn't funny, I agree there, but the rest were. Especially the last one, that was one was hilarious, like I said, it made people that didn't like him laugh, so he had a bit of impact atleast.
I know! I thought it was disgusting also! I watched it, hoping Rove would talk about Bobs achievements or something, but then he just made him say all of these sick, and disgusting things! I thought it was just wrong!
I wrote lots of emails, to rove telling him how stupid i thought it all was, but his crew are also pathetic, and havn't even written back, to even one! I am very disapointed with him!
I am suprised that Bob agreed to doing the interveiw! My mum rang up Roves studio, asking what he would be doing the night before, and seeing if we could get tickets to see him in the audience, because they said that they were going to be doing a live broadcast from where he was from! But they didn't!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Trouble is, Rove couldn't have made Bob say anything that he didn't want to; Bob would have had to agree to take part ... which in many ways makes it that much more bizarre .
Jacki has already gone to bed so she just missed another skit on Rove tonight with Bob.
This one wasn't that bad.
What they did was an interview situation with Bob, suggesting he take on another cause. Saving New Zealand! (There is a lot of rivalry between Australia and New Zealand - and of course we think we are the best! - Naturally!) Anyway it was quite funny. They had a mock-up of the Live 8 cover calling it Live Eh, and a map of New Zealand under the logo. There was a few jokes about it all with Bob shaking his head then getting up saying they didn't need any help and there was no way he would help, then he pulls out a business card from his pocket and hands it to Rove and says "Sting needs something to do - here is his email address." LOL. That was funny.
This skit was better than last weeks. It was definately filmed at a different time too, because Bob had obviously just had a hair cut. Looking very nice I must say. Just wish I had known he was going to be on and I could have taped it. Drat!!
Could be Rove had to redeem himself after some of the emails he received from us and others. I'm sure there must have been many.
I'll just add that I know Bob was disappointed at how many were at the Melbourne gig. Only about 600. (He told us in no uncertain words! - quite funny really!) So maybe he was advised to do the Rove show which was only 2 days before the Melb. gig to perhaps drum up some more ticket sales. Whoever did the Melbourne publicity did not do a very good job. Such a shame because he is such a great performer and story teller.
Three weeks after the fact???? It just gets curiouser and curiouser.
I doubt that Rove would even realise there might be some redeeming to be done - the skits shown on 18 April were exactly Rove's type of 'humour'. (After 4 - or 5? - seasons, the same old schoolboy humour gets a bit tiring)
Just wish I had known he was going to be on ...
And so say all of us!!
But doesn't the fact that we didn't know, despite being 'on alert' for anything Geldof (and having gone to the concert), underscore the absurdity of the situation?
