The Sunday Times (page 5) reports today that there's a plan to make a film of the life of Michael Hutchence. The man behind it is a fellow called Nick Egan who's a British Director who claims to have been a friend of Hutchence.
Egan's quoted as saying "Bob Geldof's character is pivotal - I don't know who will play him yet."
Seemingly none of the Hutchence family or any of his INXS bandmates have been consulted about the project yet.
Anybody else know anything about this?
I wonder what purpose it would serve (except to make money of course)? Can't imagine how the Geldof girls would feel about it all........Anything would be bound to be hurtful I fear.
Hutchence film of excess angers singer's family Paul Ham A PLAN to make a film of the life of Michael Hutchence, the rock star who killed himself in 1997, has run into strong opposition from his family.
Nick Egan, a British film director and friend of the INXS frontman, is looking for actors to play the roles of the singer, as well as the late Paula Yates, his girlfriend, and Bob Geldof.
The last years of Hutchence’s troubled life were made worse by Yates’s fierce battle with Geldof, her former husband, for custody of their children. Hutchence, an Australian, hanged himself in a Sydney hotel room in 1997 at the age of 37.
A spokesman for INXS said that none of the current band members (who have reformed with a new frontman) had been contacted about the making of the film.
Hutchence’s mother, brother and sister are angry at not being consulted.
“No one has ever made any contact with us about doing a film,” said Patricia Glassop, who co-wrote a book on her son’s life.
“Are they going to look at his younger days growing up? How would they know anything about that when they weren’t there?” she asked. “I would be interested to know who they are going to cast, and who would play me.”
Among the actors Egan is considering for the role of Hutchence are Johnny Depp, Hayden Christensen, Eric Bana and a little-known singer-actor from Australia called Michael Piccirilli.
Egan, director of the yet to be released Red Light Runners, about petty gangsters, starring Harvey Keitel and Vinnie Jones, is better known as a rock video director. He has also designed album covers, including the multi-platinum INXS album Kick.
The new biopic is due to go into pre-production in the next three months and is scheduled for release next year.
Egan described his friend as “no saint”, adding: “Michael was experimental and hedonistic — that did involve the use of drugs. There were moments of absolute out-of-control narcissism, and other times of pure calm, when he wrote his songs.”
Hutchence’s string of girlfriends included the singer Kylie Minogue and supermodel Helena Christensen.
The film’s producers say they are planning to contact both the family and the band at a later stage.
I just don't see how true to life it can be, with two out of the three people who knew what really happened now deceased. I feel sorry for Tiger. How will they portray her mother, father and adoptive father fairlyand with compassion? I may be wrong, it may be sensitively done.
It's really hard to say what they will do with it. And it's hard to imagine how they can get it right - maybe they'll just use their 'poetic license'??
looks like Johnny Depp is going to play Hutchence.
Producers of the Michael Hutchence biopic are trying to convince Johnny Depp to play the late INXS frontman.
The film is being fast-tracked and most of the production will take place in the singer's homeland of Australia.
In addition to Depp, film-makers are also looking to cast Eric Bana, Sienna Miller, Naomi Watts and Rachel Griffiths in the movie.
The film's tentative title is 'Slide away', which refers to the duet Hutchence sang with U2's Bono, according to website MovieHole.net.
Contrary to press reports that the late singer's family was not happy about the film, producers say Hutchence's estate is cooperating with the production.
The movie's director Nick Egan, who directed some of INXS's most popular videos, has been working with the singer's brother, Rhett on the film.
I bet you've all suddenly changed your minds and are now enthusiastic, due to what's really just another rumor. As I said before, it's interesting that you'd make a decision (one way or the other) while knowing virtually nothing about the project. How can you judge a film before it's made?
I've no idea what the Geldof girls make of it, but Mr. Hutchence was part of their family and they're entitled to know about his life. I'm sure if something is misrepresented, Bob can present a contrasting opinion.
And if they hate the whole idea, well....they have famous parents, and this stuff comes with the territory. It's unavoidable, so they'll just have to learn to deal with it.

I don't believe the 'Geldof girls' would be hurt by a truthful film about Paula, Bob and Michael H***. They are sensible strong characters and may prefer the truth to be out in the open so that help could be sought for humanitarian causes.
No, I have not changed my mind. Remember, Tiger is only 10 and she was in bed with her mother when she died. I think she is too young to deal with this. Could they not wait a few years?
My own experiences as a child/teenager have too many similarities to that of the Geldof girls (though my parents were admittedly not famous) for me to change my mind on this subject either.
With the exception of Tiger Lily, all of them were old enough to know the truth from their own perspective, so do not need "the truth" presented to them by a film-maker.
I think there's a great need to move on for those directly affected by such events, and re-hashing the past doesn't facillitate this.
Every time a newspaper or TV programme brings up the subject of Princess Diana's death and attempts to find "the truth" about the circumstances surrounding this, I imagine her sons having to re-live it all. And that they were born famous is in no way a justification for the pain they inevitably must feel.
Of course I shouldn't judge a project which is just a rumour as has been pointed out. The proof will be in the pudding as they say, and this one may ever even leave the kitchen.
Honestly as a huge Michael Hutchence fan i'm excited about this movie and I think Johnny Depp would be great to play Michael, but they were close friends so i'm not sure if we would? I hope he does though.
The only reason Michael's mum and sister are pissed about it is because they aren't gonna make any money out of it. They made money from a peice of crap book and even his funeral as well as interviews, so I don't feel sorry for them at all.
I think this movie will be a fair portrayal of not only Michael but Bob also seeing as they were both victims of Paula's lies and manipulation. I don't think it will hurt the girls honestly, they're old enough (with the exception of Tiger - I don't think Bob would let her see it anyway) to know what happened between their parents and Michael back then.

No, it's you who I feel sorry for ...
Michael must be turning in his grave, espescially when such opinions are being voiced by "a huge Michael Hutchence fan."
Julia, Do you know anything about how Michael's mother and sister are? These two woman have done nothing but make money out of Michael's death. They sold his funeral to TV stations despite protests from everyone including Paula, Kell and Rhett Hutchence (Michael's father and brother), INXS, friends and fans. They wrote a book which basically ****s on everyone including Michael. They made money out of interview after interview. While Michael and Paula were alive, Michael's mother would invite them over for dinner and not tell them that the house was full with press, when Michael and Paula expected a quiet dinner with his parents and their daughter Tiger Lilly. Michael's sister even changed her last name to Hutchence, when she wasn't a Hutchence, Kell wasn't her father she was from her mothers first marriage.
Why do you think Bob doesnt let Tiger have much contact with Michael's mother and sister? I've been to Patricia and Tina's website and they hate Bob and anyone and anything to do with Bob, they hate everyone.
So don't feel sorry for me, feel sorry for Michael. Michael was estranged from his mother in his final years that's how bad she was and it's because she used her own son for money. So I don't feel the least bit sorry for either his mother or sister, no one who can use the death of a family member for publicity and money deserves to be felt sorry for.
EDIT: BTW Michael doesn't have a grave to spin in, his ashes were split into three and spread in different parts because no one could agree on one place to spread his ashes.
So I don't feel the least bit sorry for either his mother or sister, no one who can use the death of a family member for publicity and money deserves to be felt sorry for.
I take your points. Whereas I thought it was a bit crass to be so critical of Michael's family, it seems his mother and sister don't warrant a whole lot of sympathy.
I remember seeing an interview with Tina when the custody battle was still undecided; her plans to bring up Tiger in LA (? I think) had my eyes rolling, and her manner seemed arrogant and self-righteous. Custody battles are always cruel, but perhaps the way she came across wasn't just to do with that. I didn't know she was Michael's half-sister - she was refered to as 'Tina Hutchence'; the change of name certainly duped me.
So, 'sorry for' - no; pity, definately.
Depp doesn't resemble Michael at all - for starters he'd need some height.
Yo is just gonna have to deal with your own ting, negative latches on to like such- really such a bore- to get rid of.

Get with the times Justice, pretending to be a Neanderthal is soooo IN!
Although by this autumn we're all going retro & pretending to be Cro-Magnum instead.
As for this Michael Huchence film...one question. Would it have been made had he not died of auto-erotic asphyxia?
Thought not.
Cheap exploitation movie under a thin veneer of "a tribute to a life tragically cut short. Thanks, but no thanks.
Coming up next, a movie about Tim Milligan entitled "Things To Do In Eastleigh With An Orange, Stilettos & A Tescos's Shopping Bag When You're Bored" (soundtrack by Pete Doherty)

Interesting take on the motivation behind the idea. And it could well be true.
My hesitation is that the auto-erotic asphyxiation has never (in my experience) been made public; it's always reported that Michael hanged himself and/or committed suicide. I doubt the wider population would know what a-e asphyxiation is, let alone that this is how Micheal died.
More's the pity though - if it had been stated clearly from the start, instead of midleading euphemisms, it may have been effective in reinforcing that things don't go right all the time - and the result can be death.
I wonder how his death would even be handled in the proposed movie - unless (aghast) they publicise what really happened as "new information" and use it as a selling point.
Personally, I think the idea of a movie should be trashed and a back catalogue issued!
I was wondering how they'd go about his death in the movie also actually, because no body knows what happened. I'd say it would be like that in the movie too, kind of leave it open.
I can see Kate Moss playing Paula actually. About the height thing with Johnny, I've got a picture of Michael and Johnny standing together, and Johnny's not too much shorter, so I don't think there'd be a problem there.
Julia, I understand what you mean about not 'feeling sorry for' but pity, and I agree.
But WHO will play Bob? A very difficult role to play convincingly. Nobody could do him justice.
This would indeed represent a huge casting challenge. I can't even think of an actor who looks or sounds remotely like Bob.
I don't think I've ever heard Kate Moss speak so I can't imagine her playing Paula Yates. Kate always looks so vacant in photos and Paula always looked so vibrant.
