I could easily put these 5 tracks on Citizens and remove 5 songs from the March 2020 release. They are not perfect but overall I find them more satisfying.
The Zone, if worked into a proper song with verses and audible vocals, certainly could be darn good. Current repetitive riff is overused, needs a bit of rearranging and structure so that it becomes a fully realised song and not just a good basis for one.
And I Do is fairly good also. Last 40 seconds has a great feel, playing really on form and a tune I can like.
Three Dogs is a reworked Two Dogs and musically is more interesting than the rather obviously pop of Postcard.
Generally feeling a little more optimistic about the Rats music now, but hard to explain why the dreadful KISs and the Rats nadir Rock n Roll Ye Ye were seen as worthy inclusions on Citizens.
Here's my Denizens of Boomtown selection .How does it rate compared with Citizens of Boomtown?
Side one
1 No Tomorrow Like Today
2 Sweet Thing
3 Get a Grip
4 Man Like Me
5 And I Do
Side Two
6 The Zone
7Against The World
8Three Dogs
9 Monster Monkeys
I would be happier if The Zone was worked into a proper song. It's a good idea that needs working on. Yep No Trash Glam or Postcard on this. I think these songs work well together, there is a certain feel in the sound, and while far from a classic it's more akin to how I'd like the Rats to sound.
I would remove KISS and The Boomtown Rats replace them with 3 Dogs and The Zone.

I'm not too keen of the two songs you would drop either, so the substitutions are good. Enjoy your time in England and the two gigs as well. Just realised the gigs are on this week!
I would replace get a grip with the zone all other citizens tracks are Fab so wouldn't change any others
Fair enough Mike. Hope theres more to come from the Rats as the ep was pretty decent. Geldof had plenty of free time during the past 18 months to write the odd song or two!
The only way I can seem them is on screen as I'm disabled housebound but love all TBE new stuff have Bern playing the rats lp
s in order have just listened to fine art so mono next but as for new stuff love it they have moved with TBE times and I think the songs work really well
Sad to say I did not make the England trip due to quarantine rules.I was not willing to run the risk of being locked up for 10 days.I am well and truely gutted but I could not simply take a risk.

Shame they didnt remove Trash Glam, KISS, Rock n Roll Ye Ye and the eponymous song from Citizens and issued that as an EP. Being a bit generous leaving Get a Grip on. That would have been really satisfying as I wouldnt have to lift the needle
Cant say I have warmed to the new EP, but I have only heard it once. However, I know I hate the latest track with the "Back to Boomtown" lyric. How many fcuking times can the same phrase be shoehorned into different tunes? And repeatedly using fcuking in the fcuking first song? For fcuks sake!
I've listened to the new EP a few times now. Overall, I get why these were put separately to the album because they have a more positive vibe. I really like the new EP, across the board the lyrics are a little underdeveloped compared to Bob Geldof's customary lyrical flair but when it's largely much more melodic.

I agree with you about the f word in You and Me Against the World. Unnecessary and repetitive. The song otherwise is ok but what's with Geldof and his identifying with the lives of teenagers and young people in lyrics eg TGB and now You and Me? Feels a bit forced and artificial, he's hardly writing the songs for a young audience.
The Zone is a great riff that could have been done into a proper song. Lyrics here not developed and thinny vocal mix a bit frustrating. Maybe Pete could work on it for the next album, feels a bit like a demo.
Three Dogs is good, much darker in feel to the sunny pop of Heres a Postcard. On first listed to the ep I wasn't sure ,felt a bit let down, but next day checked it out again and felt in it's totality the songs gelled well together and had an overall mood and feel that worked hence my limited edition Denizens of Boomtown .These new songs are far from perfect but have made me feel a little better about the Rats comeback in terms of producing new music. I might add a live version of Monster Monkeys when I get to hear one on YouTube, just waiting for someone to upload,Here's hoping.
I've relistened a bunch of times to the new EP and it does have a consistent sunnier vibe. I'm really enjoying it. My only slight grumble is that I'm relatively certain (although happy to be proved wrong if anybody knows better) that the prominent horn parts are not real horn players but like a synth/computer horn sound. I realise this is commonplace in the record industry now and that is likely the case all over it's just the energy of synth horns and real horns is a little different and especially when the horns are so prominent on the new EP it would have been great to have real players in there.
Having said that though, I'm really over the moon to have the new rats album, the documentary, the new EP, a headline show and the lyrics book in the last year or so.

Make the most of it, as I suspect it will only be festival appearances going forward. But then that is far better place than things were at 15 years ago when you had to suffer a Geldof solo show to hear a handful of Rats songs
Which reminds me, I have to put the lyrics book on my list for Santa. Doubt Santa will bring me the new Bowie 18LP box set. £365!!
