Saw this in the TV Times. It reminded me of the 1980s when I would see the group's name in a magazine in the newsagents and get a dopamine hit!

I got TV Times about two weeks ago, but never checked who was playing on Hootenanny.  Didn't expect Boomtown Rats for sure.   I suspect the Rats will be on TV a lot in 2025.  Need to shift a lot of tickets.  Mary Wallopers did well out of their appearance last year with sold out gigs all over the place.

It would be good to think such a correlation occurs for the Rats. I remember seeing Marc Almond on it previously (it's been going since the mid 90s), Madness and Dexys Midnight Runners. They all performed number one hits. Dexys chose Eileen.

Will the Rats choose Mondays or Rat Trap.? Considering his prowess as a pianist, Jools will surely want to go with Mondays? Or is it possible Fingers is in recirculation for the big 50th and will turn up in his PJs? They do like to pretend it's a live late night show after all!

I doubt Fingers would be involved given recent history, but sure he would prefer Mondays as he now gets royalties.

I would expect Mondays to trump Rat Trap, and every chance Jools plays it.  I also expect Trash Glam Baby.

Worth nothing Dexy's performed both Geno and Come On Eileen along with another song in 2013.  However, without a sax, probably best steer clear of Rat Trap. Someone's Looking, perhaps?

PS it is already recorded so obviously someone knows...

Did they? I don't remember Geno, but back then I was mid 40s and came back from a party rather worse for wear!

Someone's Looking At You would be epic. It heralded 1980 on the Kenny Everett show when it was an album track. Then it got released  as a single and was shown again weeks later. Then in April 80, Everett had them on again with the forever album track and compilation favourite Keep It Up. Cott playing an oversized guitar and Ray, the roving cameraman, getting a custard pie in the face for his birthday!

Be great to see the Rats perform 3 tracks. Maybe it was recorded yesterday as I saw this on the Jools Holland website :

December 21st: Jools' Annual Hootenanny
This year's show will see performances from a rich mix of legends, brand new stars, and artists who have had huge success in 2024.

Performing on the show will be The Boomtown Rats, CMAT, Jade, Jungle, Kathy Sledge, Marc Almond, Paul Carrack, Roger Taylor of Queen, Ruby Turner, Toby Lee, and the Pipes and Drums of the 1st Battalion Scots Guards.

You can join Jools, his Rhythm & Blues Orchestra and all special guests from 11.30pm on BBC Two and BBC iPlayer on Tuesday 31st December 2024.

It wont be a Hootenanny without a group rendition of Auld Lang Syne I suppose.

Absolutely storming Rat Trap! Can't wait to hear it live in 2025. However She's So Modern is very very dated and should be scrapped. So 1970s

And Mondays as the third song. Not so confident about playing anything off the new album then . A bit like She's So Modern it seems past it...

I think Rat Trap is absolutely brilliant. Maybe the greatest number one ever. It works no matter what. However I don't understand why Geldof just closes his eyes singing the songs nowadays. It's as if he is totally embarrassed doing it. What he needs to remember is that his adoring fans (self included) love these songs. Look at TOTP in the 1970s. He connected. Geldof needs to get his 1970s mojo back.

Agreed. He tried in vain to update it with new lines at the end :

She's so 2020s

She's coming alive

2025

But it was ultimately a strange choice for the first song. It totally surprised me.

The studio audience loved it. I thought they might go with Trash Glam Baby or No Tomorrow and dedicate it to Garry Roberts (RIP)

Spoiled the ending as usual with improvised ooh oohs, so the audience began premature applause. Thankfully left out the ridiculously long pause after 'lesson today is how to die' which often features live. They'd have edited it out anyway.

Can't disagree with a word. Mrs L in fact wanted to see She's so Modern TOTP version and remarked how Geldof was wide-eyed and seeking out the camera with the red light, imploring you to listen to the well crafted lyrics. I know he's nearly 50 years older and old people are often asleep, but no need to close your eyes Bob when you're awake. The overall reaction was very positive, they're songs to be proud of. Ageing well, nothing to be embarrassed about. Marc Almond is 67 and appears to have had medical interference rendering his face stretched and plastic looking. It looked like it could melt at any moment under the studio lights. I'd have kept my eyes closed if I was him through embarrassment.

The Rats should do Someone's Looking on shows like these.  It's one of their five top ten hits and arguably the one that has most relevance nowadays. And singing "On a night like this, I deserve to get pi$$ed" at the end would have been apt.

Well, we were hoping for this or Like Clockwork, with the tick tock refrain also apt for the countdown to midnight.

I really enjoyed Shes So Modern and thought Rat Trap was superb and Mondays I guess is just Monday and I was happy there was no long pause.I agree Someones Looking should be played more live on TV.

Mondays is the lesser for that stupid pause. About the only time it ever worked was 13/07/85. It has limited appeal and the mistake Geldof later made, and repeats often, is to try to emulate it amid non-charity concerts.

Interesting article above. Funny though that they don't mention the threat of legal action had a dramatic effect on sales.

I think they were great on the show. I understand 'She's So Modern' was a big lively hit. I must admit I'd have loved to hear Joey with a big horn section behind it. It's a beautiful song. I hope it makes a comeback for the tour. It's a real pity to not play that anymore live.
