They are always considered/categorised as Punk. Bob says they aren't. As much as I love punk, most of it was pretty much talentless noise and the only talented bands of that (supposed genre) were Blondie, The Stranglers and The Boomtown Rats. Personally I'd say all these bands were more contemporary (of that era) rock bands. Is there such a genre? What do you think? I never thought of them as pure punk.

Phew! Some statement.  Elvis Costello & the Attractions is a very obvious omission, as he is possibly the most talented and prolific artist to come out of the whole era.  Not to mention the Pistols, Damned, Buzzcocks, Ramones, Jam, Clash ...

I think New Wave is probably a better description of the genre (if it needs a label)

I wouldn't have said the Pistols and the Damned, or even the Clash were talented - they don't touch the Rats. the Buzzocks aren't really a match either. Actually when you think of it, not many are Hmm maybe I'll give you the others... but they don't compare to the Rats.

Just a curious thing. How does Bob categorise them? Any ideas.

If it's good music, I believe it defies categorization.  It's good rock 'n roll, plain and simple.  The Boomtown Rats had their own unique sound, which made them hard to categorize.  [Most rock music that stands the test of time share that quality.  The music is unique, which makes it hard to categorize, and also makes it seem fresh and new 25 years after it was first recorded.]

Most musicians hate to see their music pigeon-holed into a specific category.  Music Critics love to tell us what category different music groups are in, but in the end, does it matter?
