Another Role For Bob

While I am still getting over the shock of finding out through the newspaper that Geldof is planning to be in Australia next week, I'm also trying to fathom that I won't hear a musical note from him.  He'll be in a different role, as explained in this article, though it seems the Melbourne engagement won't go ahead.*

Although the story can be found at: http://www.theage.com.au/news/national/how-to-lose-buyers-not-influenc e-people-geldof-gig-woes/2006/07/05/1151779012302.html#

I've copied the article here as "The Age" (newspaper) archives its stories fairly quickly and a nominal fee is charged for access.

How to lose buyers, not influence people: Geldof gig woes

Jesse Hogan
July 6, 2006

IT WAS promoted as a "once-in-a-lifetime opportunity", a business leadership conference in Melbourne featuring Bob Geldof, Sex Pistols founder Malcolm McLaren and Survivor creator Mark Burnett.

But the group dubbed "the Influentials", it seems, is not so influential.

The conference is due to be held at Melbourne Town Hall on Tuesday but The Age believes it has been quietly cancelled by its New Zealand-based organisers, Red Carpet.

So quietly, in fact, that it was still being promoted on the website last night as "selling fast". Single tickets to the conference cost $795, while corporate suite tickets cost $1650 — or $11,880 for a table. Selected charities and small businesses were able to apply for concession tickets at $495 each.

When asked last night if the Melbourne event had been cancelled, Red Carpet director Simone Williams said: "At this stage we're not in a position to confirm that at all.

"Our situation today is that we have an event happening in Melbourne, and then of course in Sydney and Auckland," she said.

One of the event's sponsors, the Victorian Employers Chamber of Commerce and Industry, last night said it had not been been told of any cancellation.

It is believed another sponsor, radio station 3AW, was last night informed that a planned interview with Geldof to discuss the Melbourne event had been cancelled.

Ms Williams said the Sydney and Auckland legs of the conference tour would "absolutely" go ahead as planned. When asked if the Melbourne event was also "in concrete", she replied: "At this stage, yes it is."

The reason for the cancellation has not been revealed, but is believed to relate to poor ticket sales.

The fourth speaker at the Melbourne conference was due to be Bob Isherwood, the worldwide creative director of advertising agency Saatchi & Saatchi. All were scheduled to speak for up to an hour, including taking questions from the audience.

Geldof, the creator of the Live Aid and Live 8 concert events, was due to speak about his experiences using his political influence to fight global poverty, with Burnett to speak about "the new reality in media" and McLaren to discuss the future of popular culture.

A spokesman for Epicure Catering, which caters for events at Melbourne Town Hall, did not return calls to The Age regarding the event.

The Sydney conference is due to be held on Wednesday.

'Bob Geldof and friends get down to business on the Influentials' website.'

* Since theis article was published, it has been confirmed that the Melbourne leg of the conference has been cancelled.

IF (I say if, because we don't know the real reasons yet, maybe double booking maybe not,)Bob had to choose between a charity concert for MPH in Lisbon and a conference which would make him a lot of money, then I admire him for choosing the concert. It will be interesting though to see if he makes Germany the day after he is supposed to be in NZ.

Regarding the cost, I believe this is pretty standard for that type of shows. The audience is usually corporate, and tax deductible I'm sure.

From the link provided by Jules:

But Mr Geldof, Mr Isherwood and Mr McLaren will get to sample the delights of Melbourne without singing for their supper.  The three will fly to Melbourne for a "small private lunch for the show's sponsors", Ms Williams said.

I should've gate-crashed ... no lack of interest here in a certain Bob Geldof.

(and it is *just a bit* appalling that Melbournians didn't express enough interest ... shame, shame, shame!)

I don't have the liink right now, but apparently when Bob was asked about the influentials and lack of interest he claimed to know nothing about the event.

Watch a short video interview of Bob,"in all his dishevelled glory", as one NZ paper put it, rubbishing the NZ government on their aid efforts.

Bob is described in the 'Sydney Confidential': http://entertainment.news.com.au/story/0,10221,19767933-7484,00.html  as

"sporting a bleach-blonde bedhead".

I don't see it in the photos of the 'Influentials' media forum - unless the camera is lying and Bob had a run-in with some peroxide since the Melbourne concert in April, where it was a fairly uniform light grey (and looked nothing like blonde!!).

It was a well coloured and cut bouffant (in the most liberal interpretation!!) .
