Is there any Rat's/Geldof fans out there who speak italian? I would like to chat whilst learning the language - that is if you have the patience to help me along. I can speak a bit, but would like to improve further.
I would welcome any english speakers too. I have been a Rats fan forever & was pleasantly surprised to see that there are quite a few of us still out there, especially after reading about the italian cancellation saga.
I did try to learn Italian some time back, but it was supposed to be a beginners course - and my tutor in her wisdom decided that we should do an accelerated course towards a degree. We didn't learn much as a result. It was enough to kind of get me by in Rome the other week, an odd word with a bit of sign language did the trick. I couldn't hold a conversation with you though.
There are people here from all over the world, so you may find Italian speakers around. Where are you from?
I am from a little place called Haworth in West Yorkshire. You may know it as the birth place of the Bronte Sisters "Wuthering Heights" & all that.
It is also where Bob did some filming for the film "The Wall". I always remember coming home from school one evening & seeing all the lights at the train station where he was. Being a 4ft something 10 year old I was quite intimidated by this 6' 3" rugged irish man in a russian hat, but was determined to get his autograph so I approached him sheepishly & said "can I have your autograph 3 times please Bob" - one for me & two for my mates who were also too scared. His answer was a classic " I'm not a F****!!! fish & chip shop". Luckily he was only joking & I got the autographs.
Years later my friends sister became the nanny for Bob & Paula and took up residency in the basement of their house on Kings Rd, so I was lucky enough to visit a couple of times around the Live Aid 1 era. Never reminded him of the embarrasing situation though!
What about you - i see that you have met Bob - when & how?
I have been to Haworth.. it is very pretty. Was on a trip to a factory outlet up that way, which my friend and I didn't like much. Haworth was the highlight of our day out. That sounds like a Bob quote, he obviously hasn't changed much over the years. I wasn't lucky enough to meet him in the Rats era. I met him at Tamworth, Aylesbury and Cardiff at gigs. I'd have run a mile if I saw him when I was younger . You've been a Rats/Geldof fan for a long time too then....
Been a rat's fan since buying Like Clockwork - 59p from Boots!!! Loved them ever since. I was really pleased when they came backwith "In the Long Grass" after that long spell out.
Favourites are too many to choose from, but love: Joeys on the street again, Rat Trap, Dave..actually, the list goes on. What about you?
Why not go to the How Did You Get Into The BTRs? thread. You'll see my Rat history in there. You can add yours too.
Dave is my all time Rat favourite, but Looking After No 1 introduced me to them, so that holds high esteem! Banana Republic also is fabulous. I forget how good it is, then I listen again and think that song is just brilliant.
In The Long Grass is probably the best album. It was worth waiting for. Hope we can say the same about new BG stuff, after making us wait so many years. I have every faith in him though...
spooky - being listening to Banana Republic loads in the last few days - its what inspired me to look on the web to see whether there still was any interest out there.
Will take a look on the link & add my bit as soon as possible - look forward to seeing yours.
PS. Haworth is a long way to go to visit a factory outlet!
I haven't seen Bob in concert, but hope he'll do some smaller shows in the US someday. [I'm sure those things are hard to book for a profit when they are so far from home.] I'm pretty sure I could talk a coworker and my sister into going if he played Minneapolis/St. Paul, MN (or somewhere nearby us in MN). My sister is getting into Bob's solo work now too, as when she gave me the box set Anthology, she received all of my Bob solo albums.
I'm sorry I don't know any foreign languages, so I can't help you in your learning of Italian.
peace & take care,
debm
