Fellow Irishman Henry Kelly says that Geldof should leave saving the world to the professionals and keep his opinions on just about everything to himself
Am I the only person who has come to the conclusion that Bob Geldof, oops sorry, Sir Bob Geldof, has at last become – after years of practice – the most annoying, irritating and self-promoting person around? He was at it again this week, pronouncing on Radio 4's Today programme on international politics.
I have some sympathy with those who say never mind about making poverty history, make Geldof history.
SIR - I found Henry Kelly's views on Bob Geldof quite disagreeable.
Geldof has, for over twenty years now, taken up his crusade to fight poverty throughout the world and has staged it manfully. He has adopted other causes and has never been afraid to promote them, no matter what the personal cost. He is outspoken, as sometimes that's what is required. He sincerely believes in all his undertakings and gives generously of his time and, more importantly, his heart. The other campaigners mentioned, though doubtless doing worthy work, have had nothing like the impact or influence that Geldof has.
I suggest that if Mr. Kelly had achieved a fraction of what Geldof has, he would be in a position to criticise his means. As for making Geldof history, that is an incredibly trite comment. It is a shame, that we don't have more bores like Geldof in the world who make things happen.
Even if Mr. Kelly remains unconvinced, he should look upon Geldof's involvement in humanitarian causes and politics as the lesser of two evils. Without them, he may resume his career in popular music.
ArrGee
PS I think Henry Kelly is a bore as well, yet consider his journalism the lesser of two evils. I trust he will not consider ressurecting Game for a Laugh should he be made history.
On anarchic BBC2 sketch show The Mary Whitehouse Experience, David Baddiel and Rob Newman were investigated by the Broadcasting Standards Council when they called Kelly a 'wanker'. The complaint was rejected because the accusation wasn't unfair!
