He's in great garrulous spirits this afternoon at his publisher's office in London. Having been convinced that his aeroplane nearly crash-landed this morning, he is buzzy with survivor exhilaration.

During his (almost) crash-landing today, he was granted another perspective. "When we had that scare in the plane I was thinking hard about what I should have done to set them up in case I go." He is talking not of the emerging African nations but about his children.

"I'm permanently bored. That's the problem. I stay active simply to avoid melancholia and it's a frantic, often purposeless, activity. I read all the time, just to stop my mind going crunch. I work out of the flat and I just pace up and down with the phone and the guitar and, you know, try to run the family, which is f****** nightmarish and I don't mean that in a horrible sense. Don't misinterpret this in the f****** quotes."

'convinced' - doesn't sound that bad. He's ok anyway. It must have been Milan. Although he flew back the same day as us - Wednesday not yesterday- wouldn't have thought he'd have been flying somewhere else from there. But then do you expect the papers to get it right?
