G&S Rats played a Brentwood beer festival a few years back. Wonder if it's the same event? Shame it's a Sunday if so...
Yes, it's the same event, outside the M25, but easy to get to. Only trouble for me is it coincides with our wedding anniversary and I doubt Mrs. ArrGee would fancy standing in a field. Tickets are pretty cheap at about £25. Of course, it's worth going to just for the 100 real ales on tap in the Brentwood Brewing Company beer tent
Organisers promise an even bigger name will perform on Saturday night
Must be all of 2 miles outside M25 so a slight bend to the ArrGee rule on that front no issue I'm guessing. We'll have to big it up somehow so Mrs ArrGee is convinced.
Jules, this one isn't anywhere near as far as Newark if you're undecided, but does cost more per ticket and it's a school night. Hope to see you at one at least.

It's the right side of town as well, so less than 15 miles away. I would break the M25 rule on this occasion, but the date is the problem, unless I don't want a 19th wedding anniversary. I have penciled it in on the calendar, but only lightly. Might get away with it if I fail to get any Euro 2016 tickets or if The Smyths are playing. It is a Sunday after all...
Booked a room at The Premier Inn, Brentwood. Only £53/night for a quad room and can cancel it at any time up until the morning of the stay. ArrGee junior will have finished his exams so he may come along...
On the official site now, so that one looks confirmed. When you go to the site you can subscribe to get infomation on the early bird tickets which go on sale in February.
Brentwood is as close as you'll ever be to London. 20 minutes from Liverpool Street and trains every 5-10 minutes. Last train to London is at about 11.30pm on a Sunday night.
Got an email to say Tony Hadley will be on the same night along with another 80s band to be announced next week. I think I'll take Mrs. ArrGee out rather than suffer that sh!te.
Unfortunately, not many gigs. Not enough. Conflicting views on an album from the band. Bob - no, Garry - yes.
Yes but Garry Roberts told The Irish Sun: I cant quite believe it but Bob loves playing the old material so much, he now wants some new Rats songs, so were going into the studio to record them.
What does he mean, they're going into the studio to record them and then they'll present them to Bob? Who the heck will lead singer be?

I'd rather they hadn't raised people's hopes.
not quite sure what that's about. Bob actually dismissed it in an interview. I didn't hear the words out of Garry's mouth, just saw a report. Perhaps they played them and Bob said no. Who knows?
If only they were slightly better gigs...can't justify a trip to any of these festivals so far with such dodgy lineups!
I'd go to Brentwood despite the dodgy line up but for the date.
Train fare only £6.60 return and ticket for £20. Beer money about £50. Food £5 for a burger.
I suspect it will be an on the day decision. If it's raining I ain't going for sure.
I'd very nearly booked it after your early bird post before spotting a diary clash, alas.
I will wait and see how things are nearer the time. Too many variables at the moment, weather, wife etc.. Will keep the hotel room booked. There may be some free tickets/further offersl in forthcoming months.
So how popular are these races? Are you likely to go and find they're sold out? Also does anyone know if you can buy a ticket and then go out and miss the race . Suppose could sit in the bar!!! .

Pretty unlikely to sell out. Not sure it ever has. The Christmas programme can attract around 15,000, but there will be far less in the summer hence the bands to get a bigger crowd. I suspect the section where the band play will be sectioned off for most of the time and only opened after the last race at about 8.30pm, but that's just speculation on my part.

Only thing you need worry about is flight for now. Little chance of me going as a) it is well outside the M25 (though just inside the M50) and b) I will be back from vacation the day before and have zero days holidays remaining in my holiday year that ends in March 2017. Should I get made redundant or be inbetween jobs then maybe I could, but I am going back to my M25 policy. May stretch to Brentwood, but will be an on the day decision. Three trips to Ireland to see The Rats is enough for now. Maybe if they do a 50th anniversary gig in ten years time...

According to sponsors Bulmers Cider 36,000 people attended over the course of their Live at Leopardstown series of gigs in 2014. Seems that was over a few events throughout June, July and 'special events' in August.
I think Human League played there in August 2015. Should get a decent crowd as lots of people go racing just for the social aspect and the drink(ahem). Also Leopardtown is very near Dun Laoghaire so really Rats backyard. I think back in 1980 they had scheduled Leopardstown as a substitute for the Popes Tent/Phoenix Park gigs that were 'banned'. Leopardstown then fell through ,and the homecoming gig was finally organized for Leixlip Castle, home of some of the Guinness family.
BTW The name derives from a 14th century lepers hospital, the name being 'corrupted' to Leopardstown as sometimes happens with place-names. The hospital was originally in St Stephens Green but was moved out to the countryside that is now Leopardstown.

That 36,000 is a cumulative figure over eight dates, so that is about 4-5,000 on average. They could accommodate 16,000 plus no problem. Don't think advance tickets are needed.

At the moment I feel, shall we say, less than enthusiastic. Same old songs, same old jokes- kinda like going to see the Rocky Horror Show. Not a hint of any new songs to spice things up. It's all getting rather predictable methinks.

Let's do the Time Warp again!
I agree. After a bit of a break on my part for most of last year, it was the same show in December 2015 as it was in June 2013. In fact, less as there were longer sets at Hurtwood and Cork. So after two and a half years, nothing has changed. Same snake skin suit, same songs in the same order yada yada yada. Fine if you haven't seen it all before, but if it is the ninth or tenth time it's not going to make you bother with it all again, bar some exceptions. Maida Vale was great because it was different. It doesn't even have to be radically different, the odd surprise song or two would do.
Having mentioned the suit, I noted Zoolander had the look way before Boomtown Bob...

Completely get what you're saying here. They are reliant on people not having seen it or loyalty like Suss and me and others. Hope for a few small changes though. As you say it would make all the difference.

If anything the festival dates seem even less surprising and even more predictable (hits and finish with eponymous song). The only difference between Cambridge 2014, Forum 2014 and Dublin 2015 were the encore songs; Never Bite The Hand That Feeds & She Does It Right rather than Howard Hughes. Even in 2013, the Cambridge and Roundhouse sets were identical.
There are a few bands I have seen on a frequent basis down the years, but I have never known any do identical sets time after time over such a long period.
They are reliant on people not having seen it or loyalty like Suss and me and others.
So as long as there's a few more 1980s festivals to be played they seem to be reliant on festival bookings. The quality of the festivals is diminishing. Isle of Wight and Cork were top notch back in 2013 whilst Latitude and Electric Picnic last year were also premier festivals, but this year's bookings look like there isn't much left for them to play, even heading back to the festivals that the Barton/Bradbury Rats played. I would have thought they should be at least one of the big festivals at this stage of the comeback. Glastonbury, Leeds, Reading, T in the Park, Bestival and V should all be possible.
I've wangled flights that mean 2 days going out but, miraculously, barely 12 hours same day traveling to get home. The good news therefore for Mrs Suss is I'll be home on the Sunday before her birthday is over, by about 10 minutes

I am not even getting a ticket for a potential title decider because it's on the same weekend as Mrs. ArrGee's birthday. I pushed the envelope heading to Highbury on Valentine's morning (I fcuking hate how Sky arrange these date changes with just over a fortnight's notice), which I only got away with thanks to her having to bring our daughter to gymnastics. I was back at 3pm by which time the florist had arrived.
Mrs. suss will be expecting one hell of a gift this year. That's the one you need to discuss with the bank manager.

10 minutes hmmm.. You'll need to make up for that then

Indeed. Twice hopefully.
I'll be sure to bring back something nice from the arctic

Well they say the definition of madness is doing the same thing and expecting a different outcome.Ergo all us regulars/fanatics are mad. Bob stated in one of his recent interviews that the snake skin suit idea came after watching ' a Nicholas Cage movie'. The film in
question is Wild At Heart, a bit hig back in the early nineties. PS I've never seen Zoolander, nor do I wish to.
PS Dun Laoghaire would be a great place for a meet up as it's a 20 minute bus ride from Leopardstown. That's if i still have the will to see them.

The original snake suit idea. Nicholas Cage in Wild At Heart:
Just a jacket. That doesn't count. Boomtown Bob is more Blue Steel.

You should, it's very funny. Avoid the sequel though. ArrGee junior wasn't impressed.

I saw a video of Alice Cooper in full snakeskin, but can't find any images, nor can I remember what song he was singing on it. Aaarrrggghhh. I think it was from the 70s.
Flights booked It's Dublin suburbs for those not necessarily familiar
Re: Leopardstown, I also booked the Clayton Hotel (formerly Bewley's) which is a one hour one bus (700) ride direct from airport door to door.
I reckon with a good run it could be home to hotel (near venue) in 3.5 hours.
Just saying travel needn't be a blocker if you're UK based and have an airport serving Dublin nearby, especially if you can get a budget flight.
Right, booked the Clayton and the Harding in Dublin for a couple of nights before (not going there without seeing Dublin). What do all these ticket types mean? I've emailed them. Summer Party, Enclosure, top seats etc. any ideas?
Not really but would hazard a guess enclosure is basic entry standing at track level, top seats presumably upper grandstand, and summer party probably includes a beer or something (wine, fizz, Pimms) in a tent between races.
More important I guess is what view you'll get of any stage.
That's what I need to know. I. Don't care about drinks, just want to be near the stage for the Rats . If out search n the website it says enclosure means access to everywhere (not backstage), where there are restaurants etc and top seats, upper grandstand, but doesn't mention summer party or summer party bundle. I think there was a restaurant option. Not interested in that. See what they say.
Leopardstown Racecourse just made me an offer I can't refuse (I guess): free tickets, free meal and access to the press pit, in exchange for them using a picture I took at a gig last year
And the funny thing is: it's not even a Rats picture, but one I took at a solo gig
They said, doesn't matter, they'll photoshop it. I wonder how they will transform Vince into Darren
That is a great photo. Personally I wouldn't allow anyone to Photoshop my photos, even for the freebies. Unless they are Photoshop geniuses they will spoil it.

Agree, I think they would really have to be something special not to spoil it.
Maybe the venue isn't quite ready? Perhaps it will be reinstated at some point. Although it was getting too close for comfort without any tickets being sold.
Looks like the festival gig in Brentwold is not a headline show. Just been on the festival website and the lineup advertised so far is
Tony Hadley
ABC
Boomtown Rats
in that order. So that will mean it will be a short set for the Boomtown Rats.
Also the gig at Hurtwood polo club in Dorking is a charity gig organised by Kenny Jones ex drummer with Small Faces, Faces and the Who. The Bbomtown Rats are also not headlining this gig as Kenny Jones is. So again they will play a short set at this festival. So if you are thinkng of going to one of these festivals to see the Boomtown a Rats just been warned they will play short sets like they do when they play at the 80's festivals. I could be wrong but thsts what it looks like to me.

Yes, we do often get shortchanged at festivals. Another reason I don't actually like them. I still go and only go for the Boomtown Rats. Even if it's a 30 minute set!
Looks like the festival gig in Brentwold is not a headline show.
Not sure - see the poster above in this thread (17/2). On basis first named are clearly top of the bill Fri and Sat then same would be true of Rats on Sunday.
Either way for this and Hurtwood they have a tried and trusted 40 minute set and also an hour set if time permits, assuming no revision to the festival sets used previously.
Looks like the Basingstoke gig is back on for 29th April at the new music venue the stage. With ticket on sale 25the March. The Bob Geldof Twitter site told me that it was cancelled. But the stage Facebook pages is advertising it as Happening. Not 100% sure but fingers crossed it will happen. i have moved to Cornwall but my parents live about 15 minuets drive from Basingstoke so if it's on would come up to the south for this gig and stay the weekend at there place.
Got a ticket for Boomtown Rats in Basingstok the gig is at this new venue that is opening in Basingstoke. They have turned the towns cheesy night club in a new live music venue. This weekend you can only by tickets from a ticket stall in the Basingstoke Festival place shopping Center. Online tickets go on sale on 25th March. The Support act is Max Milner some young lad from the TV show the Voice UK. So I am ok with this support act just glad the suport act is not Patrick Fitzgerald who was support act on the 2013 tour. He was not my cup of tea to be polite. It's the venue who have organised this gig as it part of a 3 day weekend of gigs gor the opening of the burned. The venue are trying to claim its Boomtown Rats only indoor UK gig this year.
