I might be the only person on this forum who is positive about the new album. I don't expect it to be bad and I'm looking forward to hearing it.

I was at the last ever Rats gig at the RDS Dublin in 1986. It's a huge big deal for me that my all-time favourite band are releasing a new album. I want it to be great but I've got no idea how it will sound. I'm more into the idea of a new album than just playing the greatest hits over and over at festivals. Making an album is making a stand, being about something, saying this is what we're about. Bring it on.smile

I could have written the above word for word, except I was not at Dublin for the last gig of the first incarnation. I keep checking the Internet for news. It's a bit like 80 to 85, where each Friday I would wait for Record Mirror to arrive and then quick scan it for any mention of the Rats and any possible new release or news. 83 was a very fallow year so you can imagine in early 84, how excited I was with news of Tonight's release. I hope C of B is great, but if not, cest la vie and Ireland's finest have given me a back catalogue and memories to treasure. I don't think a week goes by where I don't play something by them. My friends and family think it's an obsession but my best mate said he's jealous, as he wishes he had a band he was into above all others.

Pah!  I was at the next one in May 2013...  (or was it 2008? Matter of opinion I guess)

Did see the last Bradbury Rats gig in Dublin.

I was at the one in the country pub in Surrey ie the warm up for the Isle of Wight Festival. Remember semi naked woman jumping up on stage and dancing with Bob. Geldof saying 'it's great to be here, wherever we are...' Good times.

Sorry it was Sussex and the second gig after RDS.   Call yourself a fan?

https://boomtownrats.activeboard.com/t52343677/rats-2013-dates/

I didn't see the first 2008 gig at Pig Nose Inn, so not a fan either.  It was the third or fourth gig at 100 Club I saw.

Well if you're into correcting people who's been getting the ex-Stranglers singers  name wrong as long as I've been posting. Not an English county if you check it out. Call yourself a fan.smile

Purely for the record, the last Bradbury Rats gig was at Bristol as part of the Class of 77 tour, a couple of weeks after Whelans in Dublin.

And there was Geldof in the NZ Herald video interview a few days ago extolling the virtues of BMG , basically saying that the album is coming out on a big/major label. BMG at least should be able to mount some sort of publicity or advertising campaign but so far nothing. Not even an acknowledge that the band is on their roster.

Also they have missed all the music mags October issues for a single allegedly being released in October.

There are various ways to contact BMG but nobody gets back to you. If anything, the people answering the phone sound bemused and surprised, almost unaware that the Rats are on their books.

Fax +44 20 3214 1201

The Rats should hold the release back to May 2020 so they could sell the LP at the two festival appearances in Ware and Norwich.

Surely we need to get Boomtown done, no ifs or buts, come what may, a Feb release do or die. I'm not sure the public will put up with more dither and delay.

Or wait until they play at Glastonbury next year. Will be 35 years after they last appeared.

Only 52% of the public.  The other 48% would accept the delay, and may not want it to happen at all!

I am pretty certain the LP won't be released in February 2020.  If it was some January/February dates would have been announced and they haven't announced any.     May 2020 looks far more likely.  They could sell a few at the festivals before anyone heard it.  And when people do hear it they will be amazed, because Pete Bremain has stated it is the best they have ever done.

Gut feeling as well that we won't see the new album until April/May. No one outside Pete B knows anything. Nothing being mentioned anywhere.

Only 52% yes, but imagine 17.4 million album sales biggrin

I still hope it's Feb but as long as there is an official release date I would be happy at least there would be something concrete to look forward to buy the silence is annoying that's just how I feel

Looking unlikely, but doesn't take much to release a single these days.  Just drop the MP3 onto Amazon/Spotify/Deezer etc.

Don't expect anything physical.

Apparently so. But there is nothing to be found anywhere promoting the new single and nobody even knows what its title is.

I guarantee the title contains the word BOOMTOWN and/or the character sequence RAT.

There were plenty of Rat references in the early years too, like Rat Trap, Do the Rat, Ratrospective, the eponymous first album, Rat Tracks - but nobody could guarantee the next single would reference the rodent, do or die, come what Theresa. I grant you there may be a slightly increasing trend line of late, but it's not a given.

I do say all of this of course, in the knowledge I'm responding to mystic ArrGee!

A title with neither BOOMTOWN nor RAT in it? No way!  I wonder how many times both words will be recited on the LP.  If the Ratsh!t ep is indicative it will be around 100.

I have to revise this.  Now there is a date in late February/early March, which would provide a good opportunity to sell the record.

They probably read my comment about the title and decided "Rat in Boomtown" wasn't the best lead single.

Never In A Million Years was released well ahead of V Deep, about four months in fact.

Never in a million years should have been properly rereleased, it is such a great song. Back in the day particularly, an album used to be released around the time of the second single's release so this would often be a few months after the lead single.

In the long grass was released nearly a year after Tonight. Granted, circumstances were unusual.

I cannot stand Never In A Million Years, terrible first choice for a single which never fitted the album. 2nd worst Rats single after Charmed Lives.

House on Fire would have been the better first choice single off V Deep and probably would have gone around 10 places higher than 24 as a result.

The travesty is that the brilliant He Watches was never a single.

I think Rats are missing a trick not releasing the LP before the end of the year. I get asked by all and sundry if I would like something for Christmas, and I struggle to think of anything. An LP would be perfect.

As an aside if Santa is reading I would like

  • David Bowie Playing Cards
  • Sega Mega Drive Mini
  • Alan Turing cuff links
  • And as many bottles of wine as you can get on your sleigh

Heres hoping that there is a new album with songs that hark back to the classic rat sounds of the early days.
Some fast songs with the great two guitar sound that works so well for them, especially live.

Even track10 is ok I love the eponymous song I know I'm in minority but still that my opinion and I don't apologize about it and still play 10inch ep.regularly

Not too keen on eponymous song,it's old hat at this stage. Titles alone won't tell us much.

Most likely, in the great tradition of the Rats, some of the b sides will be better than some of the album tracks. So it's back to waiting again.

They may announce one or two Irish dates as part of tour.

Sorry Grandad, but there are no B-sides anymore   More likely there will be a deluxe edition released a bit after the original release

Bound to be dates in Ireland. June looks most likely. Hoping they play the tent in Cork again.  First tent gig is 30th May, so will be just after their first festival dates.

Recent activity is promising, but this is just one of a number of sites suggesting the album has been put back to 31/03/20

https://www.stereoboard.com/content/view/226608/9

Great album cover, reminds me of some of the brutalist architecture of the 60s like Balfron or Trellick Towers in London.

Track 10 on the album The Boomtown Rats is a remix of the original with new vocals (what ever that means).

Well the first single ie vinyl release will have a song on the other side, call it what you will. This song will not be on album as I asked Pete on FB and he confirmed this.

I'm calling it a b side. A rose by any other name etc

Just hope the music isn't brutalist like the eponymous songsmile

Cover is ok in that I don't dislike it.

Interesting, I believed that it was only streaming.  No sight of any physical release.

You can bet your bottom dollar there will be a vinyl single with a b side not on album. Hopefully the b side will make up for eponymous final tracks inclusion.

Ps Am in Eindhoven watching the election coverage. Bob and Pete must be tearing their collective hair out. It's that pesky inconvenient thing called democracy. smile

Singles tend to cost about £10 these days and not sure they would be worth releasing.

Maybe they can get another boat...

Looks like a decent Tory majority to get Brexit done Noel, which is a Sweet Thing. People thought Jo 'Swindle' might respect the referendum result but illiberally & undemocratically She Said No. Corbyn's Marxist dream is now Passing Through and he can K.I.S.S goodbye to any hope of power. Time for centralist, sensible Labourites to Get A Grip and fight back. Here's A Postcard with a tip on it : Never let Monster Monkeys like Jezza and McDonnell near party leadership again. You thought you were all Rock n Roll ye ye at Glastonbury, but Jeremy it's time to bow out and let us become Citizens of Boris's Boom time!

Overall results good for England but future of UK up in air with NI and Scottish situation. Certainly interesting times ahead.

I recall the boat for the Never in a Million Years video. Then there was the ship going under in Drag me Down's lyrics..?

Does this suggest more 'battling back in adversity' type lyrics?

They'll be home through rain and thunder

I'd forgotten the anti Brexit boat. Trying to forget Leave and Remain like the Archbishop has been saying!

The increasingly absurd Jess Phillips, who thinks she's a candidate for Labour leader, still doesn't get it and yesterday on Andrew Marr was spinning furiously about rejoining the EU. We haven't even left yet!

Diane Abbot for Labour Leader. Only viable candidate. Unless Corbyn decides to give it another go.

How can anyone forget that? Leave was behind in the polls until double agent Geldof intervened.

How telling that nobody has seriously suggested the absurd Shadow Home Secretary, who wants to recruit Police on 3k per year and plant 59 trees per second, could be the next Labour leader.

It certainly didn't help the Remain cause. I wonder if Brexitless Bob and Pete Brejoin regret that stunt?
